Can Dogs Eat Eggs? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat eggs in NZ? Plain cooked egg may be okay; avoid raw egg, seasoning and fatty breakfast leftovers.

Quick answer

Plain cooked egg may be okay as an occasional small treat, but raw egg is not a safe shortcut. SPCA NZ warns that raw or undercooked meat, bones and eggs can carry harmful bacteria and parasites.

Why

The safe question is preparation. Scrambled egg with butter, salt, bacon, onion, garlic or cheese is not the same as a plain cooked egg. Raw eggs also create kitchen hygiene risks for people in the home.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Use a small amount of plain cooked egg only if suitable for your dog, or stick with complete dog food and dog-specific treats.
