Can Dogs Eat Pepperoni? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can dogs eat pepperoni in NZ? Avoid pepperoni; it is salty, fatty and often seasoned.

Quick answer

Avoid giving pepperoni to dogs. It is processed, salty and fatty, and may contain garlic, onion, chilli, smoke flavouring or other seasonings.

Why

ASPCA cautions against processed meats and lists onion, garlic and salty foods among people-food concerns for pets. Pepperoni is common on NZ pizzas and snack platters, but it is not plain lean cooked meat.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Safer options are your dog's normal complete food, a dog-safe treat, or a plain prepared food already covered by a reliable pet-safe source. Keep human leftovers, sauces and seasoned scraps out of reach.
