Can Cats Eat Fruit Mince Pies? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can cats eat fruit mince pies in NZ? No. Dried fruit, alcohol and rich pastry are not cat-safe foods.

Quick answer

No. Cats should not eat fruit mince pies. Keep them away from dried vine fruit, alcohol-containing fillings, buttery pastry and sweet dessert leftovers.

Why

ASPCA lists grapes and raisins among people foods to avoid for pets, VCA lists raisins among toxic foods for pets, and Pet Poison Helpline lists alcohol as toxic to pets. A NZ cat is most likely to lick crumbs, cream, pastry flakes or sticky filling from a plate, but fruit mince pies are still a poor and risky food to share.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Cats do not need human-food variety. Safer options are complete cat food, a cat-specific treat, or a few pieces of the cat's normal food in a puzzle feeder.
