Can Cats Eat Strawberries? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can cats eat strawberries in NZ? Plain strawberry can be okay as a tiny nibble; avoid desserts.

Quick answer

Cats can usually have a tiny piece of plain strawberry, but fruit is not needed in a cat diet. Avoid cream, yoghurt, chocolate, jam, pavlova topping, syrup and mixed desserts.

Why

ASPCA lists strawberries among foods that can be shared with pets. NZ cats are more likely to encounter strawberries in desserts, jam, baking or dairy toppings, so plain washed fruit is a different question from sweet leftovers.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Cats are obligate carnivores, so use complete cat food as the main diet. If you offer a plant-based nibble, keep it plain, washed, unseasoned and secondary to proper cat food.
