Bird Cage Types NZ: Flight, Tall, Breeding, Travel and Aviary Cages
11 June 2026
Bird cage types in NZ: compare flight cages, tall cages, travel cages and aviaries for budgies, cockatiels and small parrots.
Bird cage types in NZ should be chosen around movement, safety and daily life, not just floor space in the lounge. Most pet birds need room to move sideways, stretch, climb, perch, forage and spend supervised time outside the cage.
Quick comparison
| Type | Best for | Avoid when |
|---|---|---|
| Flight cage | Budgies, cockatiels and active small birds | The bar spacing is too wide |
| Tall narrow cage | Climbing species with lots of out-of-cage time | It is too narrow for natural movement |
| Tabletop cage | Short supervised use or temporary housing | Permanent housing for active birds |
| Travel cage | Vet visits and short transport | Everyday living |
| Outdoor aviary | More space and natural light | It lacks predator, weather or escape protection |
| Breeding cage | Specialist breeding setups | Ordinary companion birds without a breeding plan |
What to look for
SPCA NZ says companion birds need specialised knowledge, preparation, facilities and equipment to meet their behavioural and environmental needs. RSPCA recommends that cage dimensions relate to wingspan, and VCA notes that birds usually need usable length, not only height.
What to avoid
Avoid round cages with poor usable space, rusty metal, unsafe paint, bar spacing that can trap a head, and cages that only look large because they are tall. Avoid placing cages in kitchens, draughts, direct all-day sun or isolated rooms where a social bird gets little interaction.
NZ buying tips
- For budgies and cockatiels, prioritise width and safe bar spacing over ornate shape.
- For rental homes, choose a cage you can clean without damaging floors or walls.
- For outdoor time, think predator-proofing, shade, wind and rain.
- Budget for perches, bowls, toys and cleaning gear; an empty cage is not a complete setup.
- If a bird spends most of the day inside, buy bigger than the minimum you first imagined.
