Staffy Puppies for Sale NZ (2026): Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breeders
Guide to Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppies for sale in New Zealand, Dogs NZ breeders, standard coat colours, pedigree papers, and health testing.
Finding Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppies in New Zealand requires navigating asking prices, pedigree registration papers, coat colour standards, and health testing. Most purebred puppies are advertised between $1,500 and $4,000, with papered puppies asking more. The most vital step for buyers is asking for parent DNA screening for hereditary cataracts and L2HGA, verifying pedigree papers with Dogs NZ, and understanding local dog control rules.
Where to find Staffy puppies in NZ
Buyers looking for purebred Staffordshire Bull Terriers should look for Dogs NZ-registered breeders and formal litter listings.
On 30 September 2026, Dogs NZ's registered litter page listed 17 Staffordshire Bull Terrier litters, whelped between 15 April and 12 September 2026.
Dogs NZ advises that reputable breeders do advertise on TradeMe when personal contacts are insufficient. When searching online, buyers should favour sellers who are Dogs NZ members. Canine sport in New Zealand is amateur and no Dogs NZ member is a commercial operator, meaning all puppy sales are private transactions.
Dogs NZ lists three breed clubs for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier:
- Northern Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club
- Southern Cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society Inc
- The Mainland Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society
For broader guidance on breeder selection, see our guide on finding puppies for sale in NZ.
What Staffy puppies cost
Most purebred puppies are advertised at $1,500–$4,000 NZD (TradeMe asking prices, 30 September 2026; median $2,500). Puppies sold with Dogs NZ pedigree papers (papers as stated in the ads) were advertised at $3,500–$4,000. Asking prices are not sale prices.
In the 30 September 2026 snapshot, the lowest and highest asks across qualifying ads were $1,000 and $5,000. One Dogs NZ-registered breeder's ad in August 2026 listed pet-only puppies at $3,750, sold endorsed 'not to be bred from'. You can compare breed prices using our dog breed price tool and calculate household costs in our guide to the cost of owning a dog in NZ.
Blue is a standard colour under the Dogs NZ standard, not a rare or special one. Standard colours also include red, fawn, white, black, or any of these with white, plus any shade of brindle. Black-and-tan and liver colours are not to be encouraged. In the 30 September 2026 snapshot, two TradeMe sellers priced blue puppies $1,000 above their brindle or black littermates ($3,500 vs $2,500). This was observed in only two litters and cannot be generalised.
Adoption and rescue options
Community organisations offer rehoming for bull breeds:
- Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue charges an adoption fee of $350, covering desexing, vaccination, microchipping, and registration. It adopts dogs to homes all over New Zealand. Out-of-town adopters of adult dogs must travel to Christchurch to meet the dog, while out-of-town puppy adopters do not have to. The organisation's stated focus includes Staffies and their crosses.
- SPCA New Zealand charges standard adoption fees of $399 for a puppy under 5 months, $149 for an adult dog aged 5 months to 8 years, and $75 for a senior dog aged 9 years or older. Fees include a $15 NZCAR registration fee, plus a $2.50 service charge.
Health tests to ask about
Dogs NZ publishes a health-test list for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier from its Accredited Breeder scheme. Dogs NZ says that scheme has now been discontinued, so treat the list as a checklist of results to ask the breeder to show you, not as proof of any current accreditation. The list includes:
- Yearly eye certificate
- DNA test for Hereditary Cataract (HC) (lifetime, done once per dog)
- DNA test for L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (L2HGA) (lifetime, done once per dog)
- DNA profile
Under the Dogs NZ breed standard, dogs weigh 12.7–17.2 kg and bitches 11–15.4 kg, with shoulder height of 35.5–40.6 cm. Dogs NZ gives an average life expectancy of 13 years. For breed traits, see our Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed profile and our Staffy vs Bull Terrier comparison.
Papers, endorsements and contracts
Dogs NZ is the only New Zealand authority for pedigree and registration papers, and warns about unofficial mail order certificates from overseas organisations.
Dogs NZ's buying advice is to insist on papers with the puppy at the time of sale, at no extra cost. Its Breeders Code of Conduct sets the minimum a Dogs NZ-registered breeder must meet: the Dogs NZ paperwork within two weeks, at no extra cost.
Dogs NZ's Breeders Code of Conduct also commits registered breeders not to hand over a puppy before it is eight calendar weeks old, to provide test results when a buyer asks, and to disclose the known health problems of the breed. Dogs NZ recommends that pet puppies have endorsements placed on their registration, most commonly specifying 'Not to be bred from and/or shown'. Registration regulations also provide for 'Pet only' endorsements.
Dogs NZ strongly recommends using a written sales contract and provides a recognised contract.
After you bring your puppy home: the legal bits
Under section 36(3) of the Dog Control Act 1996, an owner of an unregistered dog must apply for council registration straight away, or before the dog turns three months old, whichever is later. Section 36A requires newly registered dogs to be microchipped within two months. Check our NZ dog registration guide for regional processes.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not on Schedule 4 of the Dog Control Act 1996. Schedule 4 lists only the Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario, and American Pit Bull Terrier type. Under section 33C of the Act, a council must classify as menacing any dog it has reasonable grounds to believe belongs wholly or predominantly to one or more Schedule 4 breeds or types. An owner whose dog is classified as menacing under section 33C may object in writing to the council within 14 days of receiving notice under section 33D.
