Corgi Puppies for Sale NZ (2026): Pembroke Welsh Corgi Breeders
Corgi puppies in NZ: why Pembroke litters are rare, where Dogs NZ breeders and clubs list them, which health tests matter, and why NZ pups' short tails are natural.
Finding purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies in New Zealand requires contacting registered breeders directly and expecting a waiting period. Litters in New Zealand are infrequent, and registered breeders quote prices directly on enquiry rather than publishing standard price ranges. The most important health check is reviewing the parents' screening for hips, eyes, and breed-specific conditions, alongside understanding tail docking rules.
Where to find Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies in NZ
Dogs NZ lists the breed as Welsh Corgi (Pembroke) in its Working group, as a medium-sized breed with a lifespan of 10–16 years. Dogs NZ breed information warns that Pembrokes tend towards obesity, which can lead to spinal problems, so their food intake must be rigidly controlled.
Buyers looking for a puppy should note that litters in New Zealand are limited. On 30 September 2026, Dogs NZ's litter list showed only two litters, both whelped in late July 2026 and both from a single Canterbury kennel. On Dogz Online, several New Zealand Pembroke breeders describe their litters as occasional or infrequent, with one noting they have maybe one litter a year. One long-established breeder notes that many New Zealand families are waiting for puppies, and at least one breeder keeps waiting lists for upcoming litters.
Dogs NZ notes that reputable breeders may advertise on online platforms such as TradeMe when personal contacts are insufficient. When searching online, buyers should favour Dogs NZ members. Canine sport in New Zealand is amateur and no Dogs NZ member is a commercial operator, meaning puppy sales are private transactions. A TradeMe listing shows whether a seller has declared that the animal was bred under TradeMe's Code of Animal Welfare; this is the seller's own declaration rather than an independent check.
Dogs NZ lists several affiliated breed clubs: the Dominion Welsh Corgi League (Kaiapoi address), South Island Welsh Corgi League (Christchurch address), The Central Welsh Corgi League (Feilding address), Wellington Welsh Corgi Club (Upper Hutt address), and the Spitz Breeds Club.

What Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies cost
No verified NZ price range. Several NZ Pembroke breeders describe their litters as occasional or infrequent, and registered breeders quote prices directly, so contact breeders (or the Dogs NZ litter list) and expect a wait. You can also explore our dog breed price tool.
When adopting through SPCA New Zealand, standard adoption fees apply across all centres rather than breed-specific fees. Current SPCA dog adoption fees are $399 for a puppy under 5 months, $149 for an adult dog aged 5 months to 8 years, and $75 for a senior dog aged 9 years or older. Each adoption fee includes a one-off $15 NZ Companion Animal Register fee, and a $2.50 service charge is added.
Health tests to ask about
Dogs NZ has discontinued its Accredited Breeders Scheme, so accreditation under that scheme is no longer a current credential. Compulsory minimum health requirements are now set only through breed-specific Litter Registration Limitations (LRLs). The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has no Dogs NZ LRL, so Dogs NZ sets no compulsory health tests before a litter can be registered. Buyers should ask to see the parents' actual test results.
According to the US parent club, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America (PWCCA), the tests breeders most commonly perform on Pembrokes are for hip dysplasia, eye disorders, and von Willebrand disease (vWD). The PWCCA notes that further optional screening is available for elbow dysplasia, cardiac health, and degenerative myelopathy (DM). The AKC's summary of US national breed club recommendations lists a hip evaluation and an eye evaluation by a veterinary ophthalmologist.
Peer-reviewed research (Awano et al., PNAS 2009) found that carrying two copies of a SOD1 gene mutation is associated with degenerative myelopathy in the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and four other breeds, describing DM as a fatal neurodegenerative disease. However, according to the PWCCA, on average only about 1.1% of Pembrokes that test homozygous 'at risk' on the DM (sod1) DNA test become clinically affected. The PWCCA explains that by itself, sod1 testing is a poor predictor of clinical disease and advises breeders not to base breeding decisions on it unless close relatives had confirmed DM; buyers should not treat 'DM-clear parents' as a must-have.

Tail docking laws: natural bobtails
Under regulation 51 of the Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations 2018, docking a dog's tail has been an offence in New Zealand since 1 October 2018. The maximum fine is $3,000 for an individual and $15,000 for a body corporate. The only defence is therapeutic docking performed by a vet (or a supervised vet student) with pain relief.
The Dogs NZ Pembroke breed standard (dated 19 December 2013) still states the tail 'may be docked', but this wording is out of date. A short tail on a New Zealand-born Pembroke puppy should therefore be a natural bobtail.
Papers, endorsements and contracts
Dogs NZ is the only New Zealand authority for pedigree and registration papers, and cautions buyers against unverified mail order certificates from overseas organisations.
Dogs NZ's buying advice is to insist on papers with the puppy at the time of sale, at no extra cost. Its Breeders Code of Conduct sets the minimum a Dogs NZ-registered breeder must meet: the Dogs NZ paperwork within two weeks, at no extra cost.
Under the Dogs NZ Breeders Code of Conduct, registered breeders agree not to transfer from their care any puppy under the age of eight calendar weeks, to provide health test results to buyers upon request, and to disclose known health issues in the breed. At least one New Zealand Pembroke breeder places pet puppies on the Dogs NZ register with a 'not to be bred' endorsement, and Dogs NZ Registration Regulations also provide a 'Pet only' endorsement.
Dogs NZ strongly recommends using a written sales contract and provides a recognised contract for breeders and buyers.
After you bring your puppy home: the legal bits
Under section 36(3) of the Dog Control Act 1996, anyone who purchases or acquires an unregistered dog must apply to register it with the council straight away, or before the dog turns three months old, whichever is later.
Section 36A requires newly registered dogs to be microchipped within two months of registration. For council registration details, see our NZ dog registration guide.
Under the Dog Control Act 1996, Schedule 4 lists only the Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario, and American Pit Bull Terrier type; the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is not on it.
