Pomeranian Puppies for Sale NZ (2026): Breeders, Papers & Checks
Pomeranian puppies in NZ: 5 of 7 TradeMe Pom ads we checked (Sept 2026) were unpapered. How to find Dogs NZ breeders and what to ask about kneecaps and hearts.
Finding purebred Pomeranian puppies in New Zealand requires verifying Dogs NZ pedigree registration, reviewing official health screening, and understanding breeder obligations. Dogs NZ-registered breeders quote prices directly on enquiry rather than advertising standard price figures. The most critical step for buyers is confirming that the puppy is sold with official Dogs NZ pedigree papers and screening for common small-dog joint issues.
Where to find Pomeranian puppies in NZ
Dogs NZ places the Pomeranian in the Toy group, with an expected lifespan of 12–16 years. The Dogs NZ breed standard sets an ideal weight of 1.8–2 kg for dogs and 2–2.5 kg for bitches.
On 30 September 2026, Dogs NZ's 'puppies possibly available from registered breeders' page listed no Pomeranian litters, and Dogz Online NZ showed no puppy notices. Buyers should contact breeders directly through Dogs NZ to ask about planned litters.
Dogs NZ notes that reputable breeders may advertise on TradeMe when personal contacts are insufficient to place puppies. When searching online, buyers should favour Dogs NZ members. Canine sport in New Zealand is amateur and no Dogs NZ member is a commercial operator, meaning puppy sales are private transactions.
In our snapshot on 30 September 2026, five of the seven purebred Pomeranian puppy ads on TradeMe stated that the puppies or their parents were unpapered or sold without papers, and none stated that the puppies were Dogs NZ registered. Unpapered puppies cannot be Dogs NZ registered. Furthermore, two of the seven ads showed that the seller had not indicated compliance with TradeMe's Code of Animal Welfare.

What Pomeranian puppies cost
Dogs NZ-registered Pomeranian breeders quote prices directly, so ask the breeder for a current quote and what it includes (Dogs NZ registration papers, microchip, first vaccination). You can also consult our dog breed price tool and overview of the cost of owning a dog in NZ.
When adopting through SPCA New Zealand, adoption fees are standardised across all centres rather than breed-specific. Current SPCA dog adoption fees are $399 for a puppy under 5 months, $149 for an adult dog aged 5 months to 8 years, and $75 for a senior dog aged 9 years or older. Each adoption fee includes a one-off $15 NZ Companion Animal Register fee, and a $2.50 service charge is added.
Health tests to ask about
According to Cornell University's Riney Canine Health Center, patellar luxation (kneecap dislocation) is more common in small breed dogs, including Pomeranians. Buyers should ask breeders whether the parents' patellas have been examined.
One Waikato show breeder checks its breeding dogs' kneecaps (patellas), heart (ECG), tracheas, and eyes. Buyers can reasonably use these checks as a checklist of questions to ask any breeder about the parents. One Dogs NZ-registered show breeder also provides puppies microchipped, vaccinated, registered with Dogs NZ and the NZ Companion Animal Register (NZCAR), and under a desexing contract.
Under Dogs NZ Registration Regulations, no progeny resulting from a merle-to-merle mating, in any breed, may be registered on Part I of the register.

Papers, endorsements and contracts
Dogs NZ is the only New Zealand authority for pedigree and registration papers, and cautions buyers against unverified mail order certificates from overseas organisations.
Dogs NZ's buying advice is to insist on papers with the puppy at the time of sale, at no extra cost. Its Breeders Code of Conduct sets the minimum a Dogs NZ-registered breeder must meet: the Dogs NZ paperwork within two weeks, at no extra cost.
Under the Dogs NZ Breeders Code of Conduct (in the Registration Regulations dated 1 July 2026), a registered breeder agrees not to transfer from their care any puppy under the age of eight calendar weeks. Breeders must also make any health test results available to buyers upon request, and provide full disclosure of health issues recognised in the breed, how to spot symptoms, and available mitigation measures.
Dogs NZ strongly recommends using a written sales contract, providing a recognised form for breeders and buyers. Dogs NZ also recommends that pet puppies have endorsements placed on their registration, most commonly specifying 'Not to be bred from and/or shown'. Registration regulations also provide for 'Pet only' endorsements.
After you bring your puppy home: the legal bits
Under section 36(3) of the Dog Control Act 1996, anyone who purchases or acquires an unregistered dog must apply to register it with their local council straight away, or before the dog turns three months old, whichever is later.
Section 36A requires newly registered dogs to be microchipped within two months of registration. For council registration rules and deadlines, see our NZ dog registration guide.
Under the Dog Control Act 1996, Schedule 4 lists only the Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario, and American Pit Bull Terrier type; the Pomeranian is not on it.
