Do Budgies Need a Companion? NZ Guide to Budgie Company & Welfare

4 June 2026

Do budgies need a companion in NZ? Budgies are highly social flock birds — most do best with another budgie. Here's what company, space and attention they need.

The quick answer: budgies are highly social flock birds, and most are happiest with at least one other budgie. A single budgie can be content only if it gets a lot of daily human interaction and enrichment — but for most NZ households, a pair is kinder, because you can't realistically replace flock company all day.

Why budgies need company

In the wild, budgerigars live in large, constantly-chattering flocks. Company is a welfare need, not a luxury — lone budgies with little interaction can become bored, stressed, withdrawn or develop problem behaviours like feather-plucking or excessive screaming. A companion budgie provides the social contact they're wired for.

A pair vs a single bird

  • A pair (or more): usually the kindest default. They keep each other company while you're out. They may bond more with each other than with you, but still tame with daily gentle interaction.
  • A single budgie: only fair if you can give substantial daily out-of-cage time, talking, training and enrichment — effectively being its flock. That's a big, ongoing commitment.

If introducing a second budgie, do it gradually with a separate cage at first and a vet check, so you don't stress or expose either bird.

Beyond company: the rest of good welfare

Company is one pillar. Budgies also need a cage wide enough to fly (wider matters more than tall), varied perches, daily out-of-cage time in a bird-safe room, mental enrichment, and a good diet. See budgie & cockatiel beginner setup NZ for housing and care basics.

Quick takeaways

  • Budgies are flock birds — most do best with at least one companion.
  • A single budgie is only fair with lots of daily human interaction.
  • Introduce a new budgie gradually (separate cage first, vet check).
  • Company plus a flight-width cage, enrichment and daily out-time = good welfare.
