The key NZ reality

From 1 February 2024, Ministry for the Environment rules standardised what councils can accept in kerbside food scraps and food-and-garden collections. Compostable packaging is not accepted in those council food scraps or FOGO collections. That matters because many dog poo bags are packaging products, even when they say compostable.

Some specialist pet-waste compost systems exist, but they are not the same as tossing dog poo into a food scraps bin or vegetable garden compost. Kapiti Coast District Council's dog poo composting advice also notes pet waste systems need care because of pathogens, and one named pet waste system recommends no bags even if they are certified home compostable.

Vague words such as "eco", "green", "earth friendly" or "degradable" are less useful.

The Ministry for the Environment's compostables position statement says compostable products depend on suitable acceptance and processing systems. In plain English: the label only helps if there is somewhere appropriate for the item to go.

Council rules still come first

Many NZ councils require dog owners to pick up after their dogs in public places. Auckland Council, for example, tells owners to carry a waste bag, dispose of faeces in a rubbish bin, and warns of a fine if owners do not pick up after their dog.

Home compost caution

Do not put dog poo compost on vegetable gardens or edible plants. Dog waste can carry pathogens and parasite eggs, and home systems vary hugely. If you want a pet-waste compost system, follow the system instructions and local council advice, and keep it separate from food-growing compost.
