Can Dogs Eat Yoghurt? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat yoghurt in NZ? Best limited. Dairy can upset many dogs, and sweetened or flavoured yoghurt can be risky.

Quick answer

Best limited, and avoid it if your dog is sensitive to dairy. SPCA NZ notes most dogs are lactose intolerant, and ASPCA warns that milk and dairy can cause digestive upset in pets.

Why

Plain unsweetened yoghurt is different from sweetened, flavoured, chocolate, dessert or xylitol-containing products. Yoghurt also adds calories and is not needed for a balanced dog diet.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Use a dog-specific treat, plain banana, carrot or normal kibble. If you use yoghurt for enrichment, keep it plain, tiny and xylitol-free.
