Can Dogs Eat Almonds? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat almonds in NZ? Best avoided. Nuts can be fatty, salty and risky. What to do and safer snack choices.

Quick answer

Best avoided. SPCA NZ lists nuts such as almonds among foods that can cause problems for dogs, mainly because of oils, fats and obstruction concerns.

Why

Almonds are often salted, roasted, chocolate-coated, mixed with raisins or packed into baking and trail mixes. Even plain nuts are not a useful dog treat, and small hard foods can be risky for dogs that gulp.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

A complete dog food should stay the main diet. If you want a treat, use a small amount of plain prepared fruit or veg, or your dog's normal kibble in a puzzle feeder.
