Can Dogs Eat Peaches? NZ Safety Answer

Can dogs eat peaches in NZ? Plain peach flesh is different from peach stones, stems and leaves. Avoid pits and sweet desserts.

Quick answer

Dogs should not eat peach stones, stems or leaves. A tiny piece of plain ripe peach flesh is different from a whole peach, but peaches are best treated cautiously because the stone can be swallowed and many peach foods are sweetened or baked.

Why

Pet Poison Helpline's toxic food guide groups peaches with stone fruits because stems, pits and leaves can contain cyanide compounds. ASPCA's people-foods guidance also warns about fruit pits and seeds for pets. In NZ, watch for peach stones from summer fruit, canned peaches in syrup, peach crumble, pavlova topping, lunchboxes and compost buckets.

Safer alternatives

Safer options are tiny pieces of plain, prepared fruit your dog already tolerates, or your dog's normal complete food used as a treat. Keep treats small and avoid stones, pits, stems, leaves, sweetened fruit, alcohol-soaked fruit and baked desserts.
