Belgian Malinois Puppies for Sale NZ (2026): Breeders, Clubs & Health Tests
Looking for Belgian Malinois puppies in NZ? Find registered Dogs NZ breeders, working dog clubs, required health tests, and essential buying guidance.
When searching for Belgian Malinois puppies in New Zealand, buyers should connect directly with registered breeders through Dogs New Zealand, as breeders quote prices on enquiry rather than advertising set prices. Before securing a puppy, the primary step is reviewing the hip and elbow dysplasia scores and eye certificates of both parent dogs, while ensuring the household can satisfy the breed's very high exercise needs.
Where to find Belgian Malinois puppies in NZ
Dogs New Zealand recognises four distinct varieties of the Belgian Shepherd as separate breeds: the Groenendael, Laekenois, Malinois, and Tervueren. Dogs NZ classifies the Belgian Shepherd (Malinois) in the Working group as a large dog with a lifespan of 10–12 years. Its original function is stock herding, with its country of origin recorded as Belgium.
Under the Dogs NZ breed standard, the ideal height at the withers averages 62 cm for males and 58 cm for females, with acceptable limits of 2 cm less and 4 cm more. Typical adult weight ranges from about 25–30 kg for males and about 20–25 kg for females. Dogs NZ rates the breed's exercise needs as 'very high'.
On 20 October 2026, Dogs NZ's 'puppies possibly available' page listed no Malinois litters from registered breeders, so buyers should check this page for future updates. For prospective owners comparing active herding breeds, see our comparison of the German Shepherd vs Belgian Malinois.

What Belgian Malinois puppies cost
Registered NZ breeders quote prices on enquiry; Dogs NZ listed no litters from registered breeders when we checked on 20 October 2026. Buyers can plan ongoing ownership and care expenses using our dog breed price tool and overview of the cost of owning a dog in NZ.
When adopting through SPCA New Zealand, adoption fees are standardised across all regional centres rather than determined by breed. Current SPCA dog adoption fees are $399 for a puppy under 5 months, $149 for an adult dog aged 5 months to 8 years, and $75 for a senior dog aged 9 years or older. Each adoption fee includes a one-off $15 NZ Companion Animal Register fee, and a $2.50 service charge is added. These are general dog fees, not breed-specific.
Health tests to ask about
Dogs NZ publishes a health-test list for the Belgian Shepherd (Malinois) from its Accredited Breeder scheme. Dogs NZ says that scheme has now been discontinued, so treat the list as a checklist of results to ask the breeder to show you, not as proof of any current accreditation. The list includes:
- Yearly eye certificate
- Hip dysplasia score
- Elbow dysplasia score
- DNA profile
Nothing is listed as optional for the breed. Under the Dogs NZ Breeders Code of Conduct, registered breeders must provide full disclosure of health issues recognised in the breed, how to identify symptoms, and what mitigation measures are available, and must make test results available to purchasers upon request.
For further background on care, diet, and physical traits, visit our Belgian Malinois breed profile.
Papers, endorsements and contracts
Dogs NZ is the only New Zealand authority for pedigree and registration papers, and warns buyers about 'mail order' papers from unofficial offshore organisations. Dogs NZ advises buyers to insist on papers with the puppy at the time of sale, at no extra cost. Under the Dogs NZ Breeders Code of Conduct (in the Registration Regulations dated 1 July 2026), a breeder must give new owners the Dogs NZ registration paperwork within two weeks, at no extra cost.
Under the Dogs NZ Breeders Code of Conduct, a breeder agrees not to transfer from their care any puppy under the age of eight calendar weeks. Dogs NZ notes that all puppy sales by its members are private transactions, as no member operates as a commercial operator. While reputable breeders do sell on TradeMe when they cannot find enough suitable buyers through personal contacts, Dogs NZ advises online buyers to favour sellers who are Dogs NZ members. Dogs NZ strongly recommends using a written contract and provides a recognised contract for breeders.
Dogs NZ recommends that all puppies sold as companion pets carry endorsements on their registration. Common restrictions include 'Not to be bred from and/or shown', as well as the formal 'Pet only' endorsement (not to be bred from, not to be shown, and not eligible for an export pedigree).
After you bring your puppy home: the legal bits
Under section 36(3) of the Dog Control Act 1996, a buyer who acquires an unregistered dog in New Zealand must apply to register it with their local council immediately, or before the dog turns 3 months old, whichever is later. For registration procedures and council obligations, review our NZ dog registration guide.
Under section 36A of the Act, any dog registered with a territorial authority for the first time must be microchipped within 2 months of registration. The only exemption is for dogs kept mainly for herding or driving stock that are registered as working dogs and wear the required collar or disc.
Schedule 4 of the Dog Control Act 1996 outlines breeds and types subject to import prohibitions and muzzling rules (the Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario, and American Pit Bull Terrier type). The Belgian Shepherd (Malinois) is not listed in Schedule 4.
