Can Dogs Eat Ham and Bacon? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat ham and bacon in NZ? Best avoided. Processed meats are salty and fatty. What to do and safer options.

Quick answer

Best avoided. ASPCA warns that processed meats such as lunch meat or bacon can be high in salt, and SPCA NZ warns against processed human foods for dogs.

Why

Ham, bacon, luncheon, sausages and barbecue offcuts are usually salty, fatty and sometimes seasoned with garlic, onion, smoke flavouring or sauces. They are not balanced dog food and are easy to overfeed from the table.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Use a small piece of plain lean cooked meat only if it has no bones, seasoning or skin, or choose a dog-specific treat. Keep Christmas ham, brunch leftovers and barbecue scraps off the floor.
