Can Cats Eat Kiwifruit? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can cats eat kiwifruit in NZ? Plain peeled kiwifruit is usually low risk as a tiny nibble; not needed.

Quick answer

Cats can usually have a tiny amount of plain peeled kiwifruit flesh, but they do not need fruit. Avoid skin, large chunks, fruit salad, syrup, alcohol desserts and any mix containing grapes or raisins.

Why

ASPCA's shareable-food guidance includes kiwi among fruits pets may be offered in plain forms. For NZ homes, the safer version is plain peeled kiwifruit only, not mixed desserts or fruit salad with grape, raisin, alcohol, dairy or syrup risks.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Cats are obligate carnivores, so use complete cat food as the main diet. If you offer a plant-based nibble, keep it plain, washed, unseasoned and secondary to proper cat food.
