Can Cats Eat Dog Food? NZ Safety Answer

Can cats eat dog food in NZ? A few stolen bites is different from feeding it. Cats need cat-specific nutrition.

Quick answer

Do not feed dog food as a cat's diet. VCA explains that cats and dogs have different nutritional needs, including taurine and other nutrients cats specifically require. Dog food is not formulated to be complete cat food.

Why

A cat stealing a few kibbles is different from being fed dog food regularly. Long-term, the concern is nutritional mismatch, not a classic poison exposure. Multi-pet homes in NZ often need separate feeding spots, closed doors or timed meals so cats and dogs eat their own food.

If your cat ate it

If the food was not plain, included a toxic ingredient, your pet seems unwell, or you are unsure what was eaten, contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Feed a complete cat food for your cat's life stage. If your cat keeps raiding the dog's bowl, use separated meals or ask your NZ vet for a feeding plan.
