Italian Greyhound Puppies for Sale NZ (2026): Breeders, Health Tests & What to Ask

No Italian Greyhound litters or breeders were on Dogs NZ when we checked (Oct 2026). Where to watch for puppies and which health certificates to ask for.

When we checked on 26 October 2026, Dogs NZ listed no registered Italian Greyhound litters and no breeders, and when we checked TradeMe on 21 October 2026 there were no Italian Greyhound listings. There is no NZ price range to quote. To find a puppy, watch the Dogs NZ litter page, the DogzOnline puppy page and the Toy dog clubs Dogs NZ lists for the breed. When you find a breeder, ask to see the parents' yearly eye and patella luxation certificates.

Where to find Italian Greyhound puppies in NZ

Dogs New Zealand (Dogs NZ) puts the Italian Greyhound in the Toy group, and its standard describes the breed as a greyhound in miniature, more slender in all proportions. The standard's ideal size is 32–38 cm at the withers and 3.6–4.5 kg.

When we checked on 26 October 2026, the Dogs NZ "puppies possibly available" page had no Italian Greyhound litters, the Dogs NZ breeder directory listed no Italian Greyhound breeders, and the DogzOnline NZ Italian Greyhound puppies page showed no puppy notices. These pages change, so check them again.

When we checked 582 TradeMe dog listings on 21 October 2026, none were Italian Greyhounds. Dogs NZ says reputable breeders do use TradeMe when they cannot find enough suitable buyers through personal contacts, and advises buyers shopping online to favour sellers who are Dogs NZ members.

Dogs NZ lists eight clubs for the Italian Greyhound. All are general Toy dog clubs rather than clubs for this one breed:

  • Auckland Toy Dog Club
  • Canterbury Toy Dog Society
  • Central Toy Dog Association
  • Heretaunga Plains Toy Dog Society
  • Horowhenua and Kapiti Toy Dog Club
  • Manawatu Toy Dog Club
  • Taranaki Toy Dog Society
  • Wellington Toy Dog Club

What Italian Greyhound puppies cost in NZ

We found no NZ price for Italian Greyhound puppies: with no Dogs NZ litters and no TradeMe listings when we checked, ask any breeder you find for their price and what it includes. Dogs NZ says no Dogs NZ member is a commercial operator, so puppy sales by its members are private transactions.

Prices for other breeds are in our dog breed price tool; for running costs, see the cost of owning a dog in NZ.

When adopting through SPCA New Zealand, standard dog adoption fees apply uniformly across all centres: $399 for a puppy under 5 months, $149 for an adult dog aged 5 months to 8 years, and $75 for a senior dog aged 9 years or older. Each adoption fee includes a $15 registration on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR), and a $2.50 service charge is added. These are general adoption fees and do not mean Italian Greyhounds are available.

Health tests and breeder questions

Dogs NZ publishes a health-test list for the Italian Greyhound from its Accredited Breeder scheme. Dogs NZ says that scheme has now been discontinued, so treat the list as a checklist of results to ask the breeder to show you, not as proof of any current accreditation. The list includes: a yearly eye certificate, a DNA profile and a yearly patella luxation certificate (optional on the list: hip dysplasia, Legg Calve Perthes and thyroid). The list has no DNA disease test.

The MSD Veterinary Manual says medial patellar luxation is more common in small and miniature dogs, with signs generally starting before age 1, and that aseptic necrosis of the femoral head (Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease) generally occurs in young miniature and small-breed dogs, between 4 and 11 months old. Neither statement names the Italian Greyhound.

In 2013, researchers at UC Davis reported a familial enamel defect in Italian Greyhounds, finding that 14% of the dogs studied were affected and 30% of dogs with normal teeth were carriers. The dogs studied were not in New Zealand. Dogs NZ upkeep guidance highlights that regular brushing of the teeth is important in this breed.

Dogs NZ also notes that the Italian Greyhound can be easily injured by boisterous children and larger dogs. A 2006 peer-reviewed biomechanics paper says toy and miniature breeds are prone to forearm (antebrachial) fractures after falling or jumping; it does not name the Italian Greyhound. Dogs NZ notes the breed likes a daily romp outdoors but hates the cold.

Papers, contracts and NZ rules

Dogs NZ says it is the only NZ authority for pedigree and registration papers. Buyers should insist on receiving official Dogs NZ paperwork with the puppy at the time of sale at no additional cost.

Under the Dogs NZ Breeders Code of Conduct, a breeder must not transfer any puppy under eight calendar weeks of age, must provide full disclosure of known health issues, and must supply registration paperwork within two weeks of sale. Dogs NZ strongly recommends using a formal sales contract.

A buyer of an unregistered dog must apply to register it with the council straight away, or before the dog turns 3 months old, whichever is later (Dog Control Act 1996 s36(3)). A dog registered for the first time must be microchipped within 2 months of registration (s36A); the only exemption is for dogs kept mainly for herding or driving stock that are registered as working dogs and wear the required collar or disc. Schedule 4 of the Act lists only the Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario and the American Pit Bull Terrier type; the Italian Greyhound is not on it. For local council compliance, see our guide to dog registration in NZ.
